Roma finally claim win

Roma secured a key first victory of the season on Saturday with a battling 3-0 win over Reggina at the Stadio Olimpico.
Christian Panucci opened the scoring for Luciano Spalletti's team on the stroke of half-time and Alberto Aquilani doubled the advantage six minutes after the interval.
Substitute Simone Perrotta put the icing on the cake for the Eternal City giants in stoppage time.
Roma headed into the encounter in 17th spot in the standings following a dismal start to the campaign.
A 1-1 draw against Sampdoria and a 3-1 defeat at Palermo kicked off the domestic season and the poor form carried over to the Champions League with a shock 2-1 home defeat to competition debutants CFR Cluj in midweek.
Last term's Italian runners-up finally returned to winning ways on Saturday, although it could have been different had a seventh-minute shot from Reggina midfielder Luca Vigiani gone in instead of skimming the right-hand post.
Matteo Brighi had the hosts' first sight of goal seven minutes later but lashed his 25-yard shot over Andrea Campagnolo's crossbar.
Aquilani and Jeremy Menez then both tried their luck from a similar distance but to no avail.
Menez produced a fine low cross into the box following good work again by Aquilani just after the half-hour mark, but there were no Giallorossi forwards on hand to capitalise.
The deadlock was finally broken in first-half stoppage time when Panucci, who also netted against Cluj in midweek, fired into the bottom-right corner after Campagnolo had saved Rodrigo Taddei's initial effort.
Mirko Vucinic came close to doubling Roma's advantage three minutes after the break, only to be denied by a smart diving save by Campagnolo.
Three minutes later it was 2-0, however, when Aquilani smashing his shot under the bar from the edge of the area.
Aquilani had another blast from the same position just before the hour mark but this time his attempt flew over the bar.
France international Menez, making his first start for Roma following his 10million euro summer transfer from Monaco, continued to look dangerous and almost added a third midway through the second half but his shot was kept out by the sprawling Campagnolo.
Perrotta, who had been doubtful for the match with a muscular problem, was introduced as a 69th-minute replacement for Menez and appeared eager to make his mark.
The Italy midfielder drilled a shot against the post 14 minutes from time, only for the referee to pull play back for offside.
Bernardo Corradi came within inches of halving the deficit for Reggina in the 81st minute but his shot from the left flew just wide of the right-hand post.
Play soon returned to the other end, though, with defender Panucci looking to double his personal tally from a 25-yard shot but Campagnolo was equal to it.
The third goal did come, however, in the third minute of stoppage time, when Perrotta followed up to slot in from close range after the unlucky Campagnolo had kept out Francesco Totti's free-kick.

J-League Saturday Review

Rocked by an injury to Mitsuo Ogasawara, Kashima Antlers could only manage a 1-1 draw against Kashiwa Reysol.
The result means Oita Trinita climb above Kashima into second place after they defeated Tokyo Verdy 2-0 to extend their unbeaten run to 12 matches.
Just three days after their nail-biting 1-1 draw with Adelaide United in the first leg of the Asian Champions League quarter-finals, Kashima suffered a setback when Ogasawara collided with Brazilian midfielder Alex in the 16th minute and was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher.
Reysol then went ahead in the 23rd minute when forward Bobo latched onto a pass from fellow Brazilian Franca in the area before firing home.
But, with just one minute remaining, Ryuta Sasaki was brought down by Kashiwa defender Masahiro Koga in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.
Koga was subsequently sent off before Marquinhos converted the penalty to ensure a share of the spoils.
"I had to make a few changes for today considering the difficulty of the games and the shortage of time for recovery of our players," Kashima coach Oswaldo Oliveira said.
Nagoya Grampus maintained their lead at the top of the table after defeating Albirex Niigata 2-0 with goals from midfielder Yoshizumi Ogawa and substitute forward Keita Sugimoto.
Ten-man FC Tokyo survived an attacking onslaught from Kawasaki Frontale to secure a 1-0 win thanks to Shingo Akamine's early strike.
Yokohama F Marinos downed hosts Jubilo Iwata 1-0, Tatsuya Yazawa's last-minute strike gave visiting JEF United Chiba a 3-2 result over Consadole Sapporo and Shimizu S-Pulse edged hosts Vissel Kobe 1-0.

Miles suspended for ten games

The NBA on Friday suspended Boston Celtics forward Darius Miles for ten games for a violation the league's drug policy.
Miles, who signed with Boston on August 22, violated terms of the NBA's anti-drug program at the end of the 2007-08 season.
The league said the violation involved phentermin, which is an appetite suppressant.
The 26-year-old Miles, who has missed the last two seasons after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee, signed a non-guaranteed contract with the defending world champions.
He last played in the NBA in 2005-06, averaging a career-high 14.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in 40 games for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Originally selected third overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2000 draft, the 6-9 Miles has career averages of 10.7 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Heat rookie F Beasley fined

Miami Heat rookie forward Michael Beasley was fined $50,000 for his involvement in an incident earlier this month.
Beasley was involved in the same incident for which Heat guard Mario Chalmers and Memphis Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur - former teammates on the national champion Kansas Jayhawks - were previously punished.
"We have been informed that Michael Beasley has been fined for his involvement in an incident at this summer's Rookie Transition Program," Miami team president Pat Riley said.
"While we are disappointed with Michael's involvement, we are pleased that he chose to come forward and stand with his teammate and accept the consequences of his actions.
"We are hopeful that both Michael and Mario have learned from this experience and we will have no further comment on the subject."
Fined $20,000 and kicked out of the program, Chalmers and Arthur were found with two women in a room, where there was a strong scent of marijuana. No drug paraphernalia was found but the presence of guests violated the program's policy. The pair apologized but denied using marijuana.
Details of Beasley's role in the incident have not been released. The second overall pick in June's draft, Beasley authored one of the most impressive freshman seasons in NCAA history for Kansas State, averaging 26.2 points and 12.4 rebounds.
Beasley and Chalmers will join a healthy Dwyane Wade with the Heat (15-67), who finished with the NBA's worst record last season.

Fish thrilled after doubles triumph

Mardy Fish could not contain his delight after making a winning return to Davis Cup action to help keep the US title defence alive.
Fish last played in this event in 2004 but he was brought in from the cold to pair up with Mike Bryan in the doubles on Saturday after Bob Bryan was forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury.
Fish, who had never before played with Bryan in competitive action, could hardly have walked into a more testing situation either, with the United States 2-0 down following Friday's singles and knowing that a defeat would end their Davis Cup defence.
But the 26-year-old shrugged off those concerns to partner Bryan - who together with twin brother Bob is the leading doubles player in the world - to a 4-6 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4 win over Spanish duo Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco in Madrid's Las Ventas bullring.
"It's meant the world to me, the Davis Cup is a huge thing," said a thrilled Fish following the win.
"I've been waiting four years. I hate that it happened at Bob's expense, but I've just tried to fill in as best I could.
"I was just happy to get another shot (at playing in the Davis Cup), regardless if I get to play again. I'm happy to fill in where I can."
Bryan, who was playing without his twin brother in a Davis Cup doubles match for the first time in over five years, also paid tribute to his new partner, saying: "I'm very happy with the way Mardy played.
"He kept me positive and he kept me up there. It wasn't easy but we stayed tough and got there in the end.
"We've been great friends for years and you play your best tennis when you are having fun.
"It was a hard-fought battle. Luckily we took our chances when we got them.
"We made it to the finish line. We got stopped at the fourth (set) but kept on running."
US captain Patrick McEnroe added: "This was an awesome performance by these two. For Mardy to come in and replace Bob... well he could've played the greatest game of his life but if they'd lost it would have been Mardy who would have been to blame.
"Mardy stepped in and played awesome."
The victory means Spain now hold a 2-1 lead heading into Sunday's two reverse singles, which will see Rafael Nadal face Andy Roddick and David Ferrer meet Sam Querrey.
First up is the mouth-watering showdown between world number one Nadal and big-hitting US hope Roddick, and McEnroe believes Saturday's doubles win is a huge fillip for his side ahead of that match.
"I couldn't be happier. Obviously it gives us a big shot of adrenaline and gives us a chance for Sunday, which we are happy about," he said.
"We have to try and win the first game tomorrow, which is obviously going to be difficult, but the conditions that there are here means we've got a chance," added McEnroe, referring to the high altitude in Madrid which could aid Roddick's game.
Spain's Lopez admitted he and partner Verdasco were just unable to make it to the finishing post despite a spirited fightback in the fourth set when all looked lost.
"It was a very close match," he said. "We had it tough to come back from 2-1 down and a break down. In the end they took their chances. It worked for them and we came up short."
The winners of this semi-final will face either Argentina or Russia in the final, with Argentina leading that tie 2-0 after the singles.

Scolari: Door open for Ronaldo

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has cheekily suggested he would "open the door" for Cristiano Ronaldo to play at Stamford Bridge after seeing him mature in the last few years.
Scolari coached Ronaldo with Portugal and described how he likes the Manchester United winger as a father likes a son, although they will be opponents on Sunday when the two Barclays Premier League rivals meet.
"Now he is one of the three best players in the world," Scolari said. "I said that two years ago, and I repeat it now. If he wants to change, I'll open the door to that."
He added: "When I was at Portugal, I had to choose three players every year (for FIFA World Player of the Year). One year I chose Didier Drogba as one of my three. Another year, I wrote John Terry. Another year I wrote Frank Lampard.
"Now these three players are with me, and that's very good for me. Maybe next season, Cristiano is with me. Very good."
Scolari's comment may have been tongue-in-cheek but he is aware of the threat Ronaldo will pose when United look to close their gap on Chelsea to three points.
Ronaldo, despite looking set to move to Real Madrid this summer, made his return from injury this week against Villarreal.
United fans overlooked the summer uncertainty and gave him a warm reception, acknowledging his efforts last season when he helped his club win the double while establishing himself as one of the finest current players.
"When I arrived in Portugal, Ronaldo was a kid. A young boy, 17 years old," Scolari said. "At that time, he had a good character.
"He was starting as a very good professional, but at that time he was already thinking about his future. Now, at this time of life, Ronaldo is mature and is better than one or two years ago."

Ribery delays comeback

Franck Ribery has been forced to delay his return to action, but coach Jurgen Klinsmann feels there is no cause for concern.
Ribery was hoping to return in Saturday's Bundesliga fixture for Bayern Munich with Werder Bremen after recovering from an ankle injury picked up in France's final group game of Euro 2008.
But a thigh strain means he will now have to wait until Wednesday's DFB-Pokal fixture with Nurnberg.
"Franck is not injured, he just has a muscle strain which is normal since he has trained so intensively over the last few days," explained Klinsmann.
"(Club doctor Hans-Wilhelm) Muller-Wohlfahrt said there would actually be no problem if Franck played tomorrow (Saturday), but the risk is always there.
"In a few days, there will be nothing."

Chelsea not as big as Arsenal - Fergie

Alex Ferguson has rejected Chelsea as Manchester United's main rival by saying London side Arsenal are much bigger.
The Manchester United manager said matches against Arsenal carry much more meaning than against Chelsea. The United boss' claim may come as a surprise to the Chelsea hierarchy given it has been them who have fought United for the title for the previous four seasons - winning it for consecutive years in 2005 and 2006. But Ferguson said: 'If you look back over the last 12 or 13 years, who has it been? - Arsenal v Manchester United, Manchester United v Arsenal. 'Of course we've got Chelsea at the moment, that's without question, but the history of Arsenal versus Manchester means that you're not just talking about winning a football match, you're talking about your own history against the other team's history. 'There's a dominance attached to that. You want to be the dominant team and they want to be the dominant team - and we've had some volatile matches because of that. 'But you can't beat the history and the quality that both teams believe in, and the way they want to play has never changed.' Ferguson could have both Dimitar Berbatov and Cristiano Ronaldo in his Manchester United starting line-up to face Chelsea on Sunday. Berbatov missed Wednesday's Champions League draw with Villarreal after suffering a knee injury at Liverpool last weekend, while Ronaldo made his comeback in midweek after two months out following ankle surgery. However, Ferguson confirmed Berbatov is fit again and is also considering whether to hand Ronaldo a place in his side at Stamford Bridge. Ferguson is without suspended defender Nemanja Vidic, while England goalkeeper Ben Foster is out for six to eight weeks with ankle ligament damage suffered in a reserve team match against Blackburn last night.
