Ferguson hails Berbatov capture

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Dimitar Berbatov as a "key signing" in Manchester United's quest for a League title hat-trick.
Berbatov finally completed a four-year deal worth a staggering US$60 million to join from Tottenham just before the closure of the transfer window on Monday, bringing an end to one of the summer's major transfer sagas.
And while neighbours Manchester City might have sent shockwaves across the city with their own pursuit of Berbatov and eventual signing of Robinho, Ferguson is intent on ensuring United remain top of the pile in England.
"This is a key signing," the United boss told www.manutd.com.
"Dimitar is one of the best and most exciting strikers in world football.
"His style and ability will give the team a different dimension and I am sure he will be a popular player with the fans."
Berbatov was driven away from Old Trafford just before the announcement of his move was made public. But the Bulgarian was clearly happy as he was pictured inside the stadium and is looking forward to becoming a United legend.
"Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me," he said.
"I look forward to playing my part in helping this club win more honours in the years to come."

Nadal battles past Querrey

Rafael Nadal booked his place in the US Open quarter-finals after overcoming youngster Sam Querrey in four sets.
After a straightforward win in the opening set, world number one Nadal was pushed hard by the 20-year-old to take the win 6-2 5-7 7-6 6-3.
Querrey was unable to repeat his heroics from the last round, when he stunned 14th seed Ivo Karlovic in their third-round encounter.
But after Nadal had been dominant in the first set Querrey settled into the pace of the game, breaking consecutive Nadal service games at the end of the second set to win 5-7 and tie the match.
After stuttering at the start of the third, the American fought back again from 4-2 down to take a 6-5 lead in the set.
But Nadal held his nerve to take the lead after a tie-break, and after the Spaniard broke midway through the fourth set to move ahead 4-2 he was able to hold off the American's challenge to seal the win.

Berbatov joins Man United

Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has finally left Tottenham after signing a four-year deal with Manchester United. One of the summer's longest-running transfers was finally concluded tonight, with Fraizer Campbell going to Tottenham in a year-long loan.
United have not confirmed how much they have paid for the 27-year-old but Tottenham confirmed they had agreed a fee of US$60 million.
As part of the deal, Tottenham have agreed not to pursue a complaint against United for making an illegal approach to the player.
With no problems reported, he returned to Old Trafford, where he was greeted warmly by Ferguson and chief executive David Gill to begin the long wait to see if a deal could be done that would eventually see Berbatov wear the number nine shirt vacated by Louis Saha, following the Frenchman's sale to Everton.
Forty minutes before the deadline expired, United submitted papers to the Premier League, hoping the registration would go through in time.
For Ferguson, Berbatov's arrival was a matter of extreme urgency.
While United were always confident Manchester City would be seen off as potential bidders, Ferguson knew he needed another senior striker.
The Scot has won the last two Premier League titles, and the Champions League a man light of his preferred four-pronged forward line.
And he knew this time around, there would be no surprise signing such as Henrik Larsson to help the Red Devils out, or an unexpected seam of goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, or, due to his current injury, 42 from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Fraizer Campbell might have impressed in pre-season but Ferguson realised it was too much to expect the youngster to hold down a regular place should either Wayne Rooney or Carlos Tevez be ruled out for an extended period.
And, though other targets such as Michael Owen, Thierry Henry and David Villa were mentioned, Berbatov was the man Ferguson kept returning to.
At 27, Berbatov is slightly older than most of United's recent major purchases but Ferguson feels his silky touch - which the Scot first experienced when Bayer Leverkusen faced the Red Devils in Champions League combat five years ago.
Ferguson believes Berbatov has the quality to score goals himself and create chances for others.
Some may question the player's temperament in light of his recent behaviour but Ferguson has worked with plenty of highly-strung individuals, including Eric Cantona, and got the best out of them.
He will expect to do the same with Berbatov, starting when United travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on September 13.

Man City sign Robinho

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Brazil forward Robinho from Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid.
The 24-year-old had been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer but City concluded a deal for the player shortly before the midnight transfer deadline, with the fee believed to be a British record.
The news comes on the day Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment began the process to take over at City, entering a period of due diligence.
Manager Mark Hughes told www.mcfc.co.uk: "I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to work with such an incredible talent like Robinho.
"I have said that in order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world."
Robinho's move to Eastlands will have stunned Chelsea, who remained confident of signing the Brazilian early this evening.
Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari viewed his compatriot as key to fulfilling his brief of producing attacking football at Stamford Bridge.
But Real appeared unwilling to do business with Chelsea and criticised the manner of their pursuit yesterday.
The 24-year-old, capped 42 times, took the unusual step of calling a press conference on Sunday morning when he reiterated his desire to join the Blues.
Real blocked the move but Chelsea remained confident they would capture the former Santos marksman - until City's astonishing intervention late on Monday.
Bankrolled by Abu Dhabi United Group's takeover, City capped a remarkable transfer deadline day by offering US$64 million - with Real accepting.
City had earlier grabbed the headlines by attempting to hijack Dimitar Berbatov's transfer to Manchester United but when the Bulgarian opted for Old Trafford they moved instead for Robinho.
The Brazilian, who has signed a four-year deal, scored 25 goals in 101 games at the Bernabeu, during which time he won two Primera Liga winner's medals.
He moved to Spain three years ago after rising to prominence with Santos in his homeland. He has also scored 11 times for his country.
Hughes added: "I am really looking forward to introducing him to the rest of the squad, and to the City fans at the earliest opportunity. This is a real statement of intent as to the ambitions of Manchester City Football Club."
A Chelsea spokesperson said: "We were unable to agree terms with the club (Real) as we were not going to pay the 40million euro (US$58 million) asking price."

Roddick makes racket at US Open; Federer also wins

NEW YORK - Andy Roddick is causing quite a racket at this U.S. Open.

Breaking a few of them, too.
With fans shouting encouragement from all corners of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Roddick advanced to the round of 16 by beating No. 31 Andreas Seppi 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (4) Sunday.
Always a crowd favorite at Flushing Meadows, the former champion feeds off the commotion. In a game that's often hush-hush, he actually encourages it.
"It's sports. You're supposed to go after someone. There's supposed to be tense moments. You're supposed to yell," said the eighth-seeded Roddick, who next plays No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez. "All of a sudden, if there's a net and rackets involved, you can't do that?"
Roger Federer made his point in a more silent manner.
After zinging a final, winning forehand down the line to beat Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, Federer raised his right index finger.
Federer has won every U.S. Open since Roddick's victory in 2003. He may now be seeded second, but he's sure looking like No. 1.
"That's the advantage I have. If I were to win a big tournament again, one of those Slams, whatever, right away I have the invincibility factor again, which is great for me," Federer said. "So that's what I'm working for."
Also winning third-round matches were No. 3 Novak Djokovic, No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 15 Tommy Robredo, No. 23 Igor Andreev and qualifier Gilles Muller, who rallied to beat No. 18 Nicolas Almagro 6-7 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6), 7-5.
The women's side welcomed its first four quarterfinalists: No. 2 Jelena Jankovic, No. 5 Elena Dementieva, No. 15 Patty Schnyder and No. 29 Sybille Bammer.
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal and No. 6 Andy Murray were scheduled to be in action Monday, as were No. 4 Serena Williams and No. 7 Venus Williams. If they win, the Williams sisters will play each other in the quarterfinals.
Playing with emotion and a powerful serve, Roddick usually finds a way to make some noise. And if the fans react, even better.
"If someone tosses a ball up and you yell, then I think that's a direct distraction. If it's between points, yeah, they can do whatever they want," he said. "I think as long as you're respectful of the rules of the game, have a ball."
"If I complain about anybody carrying on during a match, I'd be bordering on hypocrisy," he said.
Just as long as there's silence during play.
"We use all of our senses. ... We're trying to see a ball moving at 100-and-whatever miles an hour," Roddick said. "As long as it's in the framework of being respectful, then I'm all for it. You can do a handstand if you want."
In his previous match, Roddick smashed his racket into the court so hard that it crumpled. To Roddick, that's OK — he sees no need for tennis to have a code of conduct saying players can be admonished and penalized for such abuse.
"If a guy wants to break a bat in the dugout, he doesn't get warned. It's not hurting anyone," he said. "If it's affecting your opponent, then that's probably disrespectful, then keep it out of there. But it's my racket, not anybody else's."
Jankovic is known to show emotion on the court, too. But she's missing something that Roddick owns — a championship in a major event.
The Serbian star won her sort of split decision, beating No. 21 Caroline Wozniacki 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Jankovic went into her trademark splits early in the third set reaching for a shot. She lost the point and stayed splayed on the court, and fans wondered whether she'd hurt herself.
But Jankovic bounced up and easily bounded around the court, quickly finishing off her 18-year-old Danish opponent. The win kept Jankovic as one of five women with a chance to finish the year at No. 1.
"It's a goal," she said, "but I want to win a Grand Slam."
Dementieva also is looking for her first major title and got a step closer by beating Li Na 6-4, 6-1. Coming off her gold-medal win at the Olympics, she almost sounded a bit regretful.
"I'm just a little sad that the happiest day in my life already passed," she said.
Muller, the only qualifier left on the men's side, pulled his second straight rally from a two-set deficit. But Almagro provided the day's comic relief midway through his match.
In the middle of a point, Almagro grabbed a towel near the back wall to wipe his face. He then realized the ball was still in play and tried to recover, but lost the point.
Bammer beat No. 12 Marion Bartoli 7-6 (3), 0-6, 6-4 in 3 hours, 5 minutes — believed to be the longest women's match, by time, in U.S. Open history.
"I didn't even really sweat," Bammer said. "I could have played longer."

Thaksin set to sell City to Abu Dhabi group

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is on the verge of selling Manchester City to a United Arab Emirates-based investment group after the Premier League club on Monday confirmed both parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
Thaksin has been looking to sell City for several weeks after his assets were frozen as a result of corruption and fraud charges in Thailand and finally appears to have found a buyer.
Reports on Monday claimed Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) had completed the deal. City quickly issued a statement confirming that negotiations were close to a conclusion.
In a statement, the club said: "Manchester City can confirm that a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) and Manchester City Football Club.
"A period of due diligence for all parties, including the FA Premier League has now been entered. A further statement will be released by the club in due course."
City executive chairman Garry Cook told the Manchester Evening News that the deal had been in the pipeline for a while.
"It is no secret we have been seeking strategic partnerships for some time but at this stage we cannot say much more for legal reasons," he said.
Thaksin took charge at City in July 2007 but his spell as owner looks to be at an end.
He had big plans for the Eastlands club but his hopes have been dashed amid legal wrangling in his own country.
The situation for Thaksin worsened further still recently when his wife, Pojaman, was sentenced to three years in prison on a variety of corruption charges, although she has since been released on bail.
Thaksin himself is facing similar charges but flew to England last month, on the day he was due to make a court appearance in Thailand.
He and his wife were due to return to their homeland in time to answer before a court in a separate property case.
Thaksin, who has always insisted the charges are politically motivated, said in a statement that he and his wife planned to stay in England "where democracy is more important".
In April, Thaksin claimed City would be a Champions League club in another year, and the apparent new owners, known as ADUG, are similarly optimistic.
Thaksin offered to resign from the board at Eastlands in August, Cook revealed at the time.
"Dr Thaksin is embarrassed about the indignity brought on all the entities - the club, the Premier League - he never intended this," he said.
"Dr Thaksin has been really open about this. He has said to me, 'If you need me to resign from the football club as a director, because it would serve the needs of the Premier League, then I'm fine with that as long as that doesn't change any other thing'."
Sulaiman al-Fahim, an ADUG board member who will represent the group on the Manchester City board, was quoted on http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/afp/sp_soccer_afp/storytext/fblengprthamancitythaksinuaebuy/28902038/SIG=110td1d2q/*http://www.arabianbusiness.com as saying: "We will release details later, but this is a great event for both the club and Abu Dhabi.
"Our goal is very simple -- to make Manchester City the biggest club in the Premier League, and to begin with, to finish in the top four this season.
"We will adopt marketing plans that reflect positively on the club and the company from investments in all sectors of television marketing and purchasing of the star players, as well as development of infrastructure facilities at the club."
Fahim said ADUG will solve all the club's problems and clear any pending payments, and will comprehensively support the club by bringing in some of the best football players in the world.
The ousted Thai premier will stay on as honorary president of the club without any administrative responsibilities, according to Arabian Business.
Negotiations began three weeks ago, and were completed on Sunday night in the UAE, it said.
Abu Dhabi, the UAE's wealthiest emirate which also serves as its capital, is vying to become a cultural and sports destination in the Gulf region.

Real lacking fire power, admits Schuster

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid's German coach Bernd Schuster admitted Monday that his side had lacked strike power after losing their season opener 2-1 to Deportivo La Coruna at the weekend.
"I didn't see any striker on the bench. I looked to my left and there was none, said Schuster, who has asked club management to bring in new forwards for the season. "We have no other choice but to attack the season with what we have," he added.
Real did not replace striker Roberto Soldado, who was sold to Getafe.
The club focused on their failed bid to sign Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, and Spanish international striker David Villa from Valencia.
Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola by contrast is spoilt for choice in his forward line with Samuel Eto'o, Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi, Bojan Krkic and Eidur Gudjohnsen, but they also lost their season opener 1-0 to promoted Numancia.
"We didn't know how to attack," said Guardiola.

City make bid to snatch Berbatov

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City have made a 30 million pounds (36.9 million euros) bid to sign Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov, according to a report on Monday.
An Abu Dhabi-based consortium are on the verge of buying City from Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra and Sky Sports News claimed they have sanctioned an audacious move for Berbatov, who is also wanted by Manchester United.
European champions United have been negotiating with Spurs for several weeks but were reluctant to meet the London club's asking price and City are apparently trying to steal Berbatov from under the noses of their local rivals.
However, the Bulgaria striker may still prefer to move to Old Trafford rather than Eastlands as United are firmly established as one of the game's leading superpowers while City are just starting to make their presence felt.

Capello deems Owen unfit

Newcastle striker Michael Owen has been left out of Fabio Capello's England squad on fitness grounds alone.
While there are bound to be some critics who feel Capello has an axe to grind with Owen, there would be little reason to fall out with the Newcastle striker, one of only four players to score 40 goals for England, given the lack of quality at his disposal.
Indeed, Capello spoke warmly of Owen earlier this week, comparing his predatory instincts to those of legendary Italy World Cup-winner Paulo Rossi.
But in the end, having watched Owen make his first full appearance in the flesh at Arsenal on Saturday, Capello felt the 28-year-old simply needed more games.
"Owen is a good player and always scores a lot of goals for England," Capello said on Wednesday before adding: "But he has not played and at this moment, we need fit players."
With Owen missing out and Peter Crouch overlooked once more, Capello has stuck with the same four strikers he selected for the friendly draw with the Czech Republic last month, with Jermain Defoe tipped to partner Wayne Rooney when England open their World Cup qualifying campaign against Andorra in Barcelona.
Robert Green and Joleon Lescott have been recalled, while Glen Johnson will provide cover for Wes Brown at right-back as Gary Neville, like Owen, is deemed not fit enough and Micah Richards picked up a knock in Manchester City's win at Sunderland on Sunday.
David Beckham has retained his place for a double-header that finishes with the crucial trip to Croatia despite his punishing schedule - he followed the England game with a trip to Beijing for the Olympics handover - and lack of worthwhile match practice with the Los Angeles Galaxy as the reasons behind an apparent decline in performance.
However, it is the selection of Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard that is the major surprise in his 23-man squad.
The 29-year-old has barely earned a mention as a potential candidate for Capello's squad, even after the loss of Steven Gerrard, who accompanied Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick onto the injured list.
But Bullard has found favour following an excellent start to the season, following his influential role in keeping the Cottagers up last term.
Capello is presumably banking on Bullard's experience helping him overcome any nerves at his first call-up and the Londoner's chirpy character should certainly help in the England dressing room.

Dolphins extend Williams stay

Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams signed a one-year contract extension on Sunday with financial terms undisclosed.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Speaking publicly for the first time in months, Miami general manager Jeff Ireland was more than willing to praise the talented, yet controversial star.
"You guys see it out there, we see it out there; he's done an excellent job in the weight room, in the meeting rooms," Ireland said. "He's come out there, he's jumped out at us on tape, he looks good in the preseason.
"Everything we've seen since we got here - and it was zero-zero when we got here, Tony (Sparano) said that in the first press conference - he's done everything we've asked him to do. He's a player that's shown he can play; he showed us that he can play so we didn't want him to make the free agent market."
The 31-year-old running back who failed the league's substance abuse test five times and sent a perennially winning franchise into a spiral is being looked upon to improve a team which finished 1-15 last season.
Speaking of last year, Williams carried the ball six times for 15 yards and fumbled before tearing a chest muscle against the Pittsburgh Steelers, ultimately ending his campaign.
This year, the former Heisman Trophy winner was to be paired with Ronnie Brown in the backfield, which provided some reason for hope in South Florida.
But it's the past that plagues Williams, including being suspended for the entire 2006 season after violating the league's substance abuse policy for the fourth time. Previous positive tests were for marijuana, which Williams acknowledged using.
Known for his interesting and complex nature off the field, Williams has rushed for 7,112 yards in seven seasons since being picked fifth overall by the New Orleans Saints in 1999. The Saints traded eight picks to the Washington Redskins for the right to select the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Berba close to United move

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos has admitted that there is little chance of Dimitar Berbatov staying at White Hart Lane.
Berbatov is on the brink of joining Manchester United, a deal that has been brewing throughout the summer and one which looks certain to be concluded before the transfer window closes on Monday.
With Berbatov constantly angling for a move to Old Trafford, the Bulgarian striker has been roundly criticized by all and sundry, including Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate. Now Ramos seems to have finally admitted that the end is nigh for the talented 27-year-old.
"I don't know where Berbatov is and he's not in the right state of mind to play," explained Ramos after Tottenham's creditable 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.Ramos' disappointment over Berbatov's imminent exit has, however, been lessened by the arrival of star Russian hitman Roman Pavlyuchenko.
Pavlyuchenko, capped 22 times by Russia, was the leading marksman in the Russian Premier League for the past two seasons, and became a highly sought after commodity thanks to several stunning performances at Euro 2008.
Not surprisingly, Ramos is delighted to have brought Pavlyuchenko onboard.
"Darren Bent has had to work very hard up front on his own. Pavlyuchenko will bring a lot of quality to the side and he is well known for his attributes," Ramos said.
"We hope that he will settle in quickly because he has come from another country.
"It's really important for him to adapt so that we can see him play very well for us."
